If you are a permanent resident of Canada, your Permanent Resident (PR) card is your official proof of status. While your PR status does not expire, your PR card typically does — every 5 years. To continue using your card for international travel or official identification, you must renew it before it expires.
A PR card is a wallet-sized document issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) that confirms your permanent resident status in Canada.
You need a valid PR card to:
Re-enter Canada by commercial transport (plane, bus, train, boat)
Show proof of legal status to employers, service providers, or government agencies
PR status does not expire, but the PR card must be valid for re-entry into Canada.
You should apply to renew your PR card if:
It is expired or will expire in less than 9 months
Your card was lost, stolen, or destroyed
Your legal name has changed
Your card contains incorrect information
You do not need to renew if:
You are outside Canada and plan to apply for a PR Travel Document to return
You are applying for Canadian citizenship

Prepare Supporting Documents
Two identical photos (as per IRCC photo specifications)
Photocopy of expired or expiring PR card
Valid passport or travel document
Proof of residency in Canada (e.g., tax documents, utility bills)
Pay the Application Fee
$50 CAD, paid online
Submit Application
Online via IRCC Portal (as of 2023, online applications are standard)
Include all scanned documents and follow instructions carefully
In rare cases, if you’re instructed to use paper:
Send your completed application to the Case Processing Centre – PR Card Renewal, located in Sydney, Nova Scotia.
Typically: 60–120 days
Urgent processing available if:
You have immediate travel for a family emergency, job, or compassionate reason
Include proof of travel (e.g., flight tickets, letter from employer)
Mark the envelope clearly as Urgent Processing Request
If you’re outside Canada and your PR card has expired, you cannot board a flight back to Canada using just your expired card.
Apply for a Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) from a Canadian visa office in your country.
You must prove you meet the residency obligation: at least 730 days (2 years) of physical presence in Canada within the last 5 years.
To renew your card, you must show that you’ve met the residency requirement:
730 days of physical presence in Canada in the last 5 years
Exceptions exist for time spent abroad:
Accompanying a Canadian citizen spouse
Working for a Canadian employer abroad
Failure to meet this requirement can result in loss of PR status.
