Grant of Canadian Citizenship – Adults & Minors

Becoming a Canadian citizen is a major milestone for many immigrants. Whether you’re an adult or a minor, you may be eligible to obtain Canadian citizenship through a grant — the most common pathway for permanent residents living in Canada.

What Is a “Grant of Citizenship”?

A Grant of Citizenship is the process by which a permanent resident becomes a Canadian citizen through an official application and approval from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

It applies to individuals who were not born in Canada and do not have a Canadian parent, but who meet all legal requirements for citizenship.

Eligibility Criteria – Adults (18 and Over)

To qualify for Canadian citizenship as an adult, you must:

  1. Be a permanent resident of Canada

  2. Have been physically present in Canada for at least 1,095 days (3 years) in the last 5 years

  3. Meet the income tax filing requirement for at least 3 years

  4. Demonstrate language ability in English or French (CLB 4 or higher)

  5. Pass the citizenship test on Canadian history, law, and rights

  6. Not be under a removal order, facing criminal charges, or under review for fraud

Eligibility – Minors (Under 18)

There are two main scenarios for minors:

1. With a Parent Applying at the Same Time

  • Must be a permanent resident

  • Parent or legal guardian applies on their behalf

2. Without a Parent Applying

  • Must be a permanent resident

  • Can apply independently with proof of guardianship or custody

  • No physical presence or language/test requirements

Minors do not have to meet the 1,095 days requirement or take the citizenship test.

How to Apply – Step-by-Step

1. Create an IRCC account

Apply online through IRCC’s citizenship portal

2. Gather required documents

  • Permanent resident card or Record of Landing (IMM 1000)

  • Proof of language (for adults)

  • Travel history

  • Proof of tax filings (optional but recommended)

  • Parent/legal documents (for minors)

3. Pay the fee

  • Adults: $630 CAD

  • Minors: $100 CAD

4. Submit biometric info (if requested)

(Not typically required for citizenship)

5. Wait for acknowledgment of receipt (AOR)
