Becoming a Canadian citizen is a major milestone for many immigrants. Whether you’re an adult or a minor, you may be eligible to obtain Canadian citizenship through a grant — the most common pathway for permanent residents living in Canada.
A Grant of Citizenship is the process by which a permanent resident becomes a Canadian citizen through an official application and approval from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
It applies to individuals who were not born in Canada and do not have a Canadian parent, but who meet all legal requirements for citizenship.
To qualify for Canadian citizenship as an adult, you must:
Be a permanent resident of Canada
Have been physically present in Canada for at least 1,095 days (3 years) in the last 5 years
Meet the income tax filing requirement for at least 3 years
Demonstrate language ability in English or French (CLB 4 or higher)
Pass the citizenship test on Canadian history, law, and rights
Not be under a removal order, facing criminal charges, or under review for fraud
There are two main scenarios for minors:
Must be a permanent resident
Parent or legal guardian applies on their behalf
Must be a permanent resident
Can apply independently with proof of guardianship or custody
No physical presence or language/test requirements
Minors do not have to meet the 1,095 days requirement or take the citizenship test.
Apply online through IRCC’s citizenship portal
Permanent resident card or Record of Landing (IMM 1000)
Proof of language (for adults)
Travel history
Proof of tax filings (optional but recommended)
Parent/legal documents (for minors)
Adults: $630 CAD
Minors: $100 CAD
(Not typically required for citizenship)
